Dear reader, my name is Caspar, nicknamed 'Hangar Rat' due to my current position, volunteering in Hangar 9 at Redhill Aerodrome.
My passion for aviation started mainly due to my house being located under the flight-paths for Gatwick Airport and Redhill Aerodrome, as when outside in the garden at a young age, I would always marvel at the aircraft which flew overhead, questioning how they flew. At the age of seven I bought my first ever flight simulator, FS2002 which had played a great deal of teaching me the basic flight controls and the fundamentals of all the clutter in the cockpit! Flight-simming has now become one of my main hobbies and now have a partial home cockpit setup in my room, which I use regularly to practice flying. At the age of 10, on my birthday as a treat, I had my first taste of flight in a Flight Design CT Ultralight (G-CDJF) at Redhill Aerodrome, and ever since have been hooked! |
Gatwick Aviation Museum
At around the age of twelve, I had begun to volunteer at Gatwick Aviation museum, at the North West perimeter of Gatwick airport, cleaning and talking to visitors about the aircraft.
I was mainly situated on the Avro Shackleton Mk3 'J' , doing internal and external tours, talking about what it used to carry and it's role in the Cold War. I was lucky enough to have been taught about the aircraft by a navigator and a captain who had flown in Shackleton's in active warfare.
